An evaporative cooler is an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for hot and dry climates. It works on a simple natural principle: when water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, lowering the air temperature. This process is also called adiabatic cooling or swamp cooling. Unlike traditional air conditioners that use compressors and chemical refrigerants, an evaporative cooler relies mainly on water, air, and a fan, making it more sustainable and often cheaper to operate.The basic components of an evaporative cooler include a water tank, a pump, cooling pads, a fan, and an air outlet. During operation, the pump continuously circulates water from the tank to keep the cooling pads thoroughly soaked. Warm outside air is drawn through these wet pads by the fan. As the air passes through, a portion of the water evaporates, reducing the air temperature. The cooled, fresh air is then blown into the indoor space, creating a pleasant and comfortable environment.Evaporative coolers perform best in hot regions with low relative humidity, typically below 60%. In such conditions, the air has a high capacity to absorb moisture, so the temperature drop can be significant, often 5–12°C lower than the outdoor temperature, depending on the design and weather conditions. This makes them ideal for deserts, semi‑arid areas, and inland regions that experience long, hot summers with clear skies and dry air.One major advantage is energy efficiency. Because there is no energy‑intensive compressor, power consumption is usually much lower than that of conventional air conditioning systems. This can reduce electricity bills and ease the load on local power grids during peak summer demand. Additionally, evaporative coolers do not use ozone‑depleting or high‑global‑warming‑potential refrigerants, which helps lower the overall environmental impact.Another benefit is the quality of indoor air. The system constantly brings in fresh outdoor air rather than recirculating indoor air. As it passes through the wetted pads, dust and some airborne particles can be trapped, contributing to cleaner air. The added moisture also helps alleviate problems associated with extremely dry air, such as dry skin, irritated eyes, and static electricity.However, there are some limitations and maintenance requirements. In very humid conditions, the cooling effect decreases, since the air cannot absorb much additional moisture. Regular cleaning of the water tank and pads is necessary to prevent mineral buildup, algae, or unpleasant odors. Good ventilation is also important: windows or vents should remain slightly open so that warm, humid indoor air can escape and be replaced by freshly cooled air.When properly sized and maintained, an evaporative cooler can provide a cost‑effective, comfortable cooling solution for homes, workshops, warehouses, and outdoor or semi‑open spaces in hot, dry climates. It combines low operating costs, simple technology, and reduced environmental impact, making it an attractive alternative to conventional refrigeration‑based cooling systems.
